Hyundai Trials Hydrogen Bus in NEOM’s Mountainous Terrain to Drive Zero‑Emission Mobility

Prime Highlights

  • Hyundai tested its hydrogen-powered UNIVERSE bus in NEOM’s mountainous Trojena region, showcasing sustainable transport capabilities.
  • The test reinforces NEOM’s ambition to lead in clean, zero-emission mobility solutions across challenging geographies.

Key Facts

  • The trial involved Hyundai’s UNIVERSE hydrogen fuel cell electric bus.
  • The route covered steep gradients and high-altitude terrain above 2,000 meters.

Key Background

Hyundai Motor Group also successfully road-tested a hydrogen fuel cell electric bus in NEOM’s mountainous northwestern high-altitude area of Saudi Arabia. The test, conducted in Trojena, NEOM’s future year-round tourism and adventure hub, was to drive the 24% and steeper inclines above altitudes of over 2,000 meters — a ultimate demonstration of zero-emissions under tough conditions.

The project is among the elements of a wider strategic partnership between Hyundai and NEOM to create the next generation of mobility. Hyundai UNIVERSE hydrogen bus was joined by Enowa, the energy and water affiliate of NEOM, with a dedicated hydrogen refueling station. The station ensured smooth performance and showcased how clean energy infrastructure may be seamlessly integrated in remote and hilly regions.

In compensation for the challenge of high-altitude driving, Hyundai equipped the bus with adaptive power management and heat-control systems. With this equipment, the bus operated firmly even at thin-air conditions, improving the feasibility of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to operate exceptionally under extreme conditions. Not only is the successful test an evidence of technical solidity, but fact on-the-spot in clean public transit.

The hydrogen machine trial aligns nearly with NEOM’s thing to come a global model for zero- emigration living and sustainable structure. It also supports Hyundai’s long- term commitment to hydrogen invention, under its HTWO brand, which represents the full diapason of hydrogen mobility results. The trial validates the part of hydrogen- powered transport in unborn-forward metropolises and positions both Hyundai and NEOM as leaders in the global clean mobility movement.
